The Verdon rises near the Col d’Allos in the Trois Évêchés range at 2800 meters above sea level. Then flows into the Durance shortly after Vinon-sur-Verdon. It thus runs close to 180 km. We will focus here on describing the three sections of the Verdon used by Verdon Xp & The Funny Helmets for its activities.
From the sources to the first dam encountered; Castillon (coupled with the Chaudanne dam), it is necessary to distinguish the Haut Verdon section with natural flow (not regulated by a dam). This section is therefore navigated by Rafting and Canoes. In spring and autumn only, when the snow melt and the rains are there. During the summer, the water flow does not allow navigation but allows a few aquatic hiking trails. In a wild and Alpine setting (near the National Park), this fairly narrow stretch of river has made its way between high walls. Walls decorated with fabulous geological folds
Gorges du Verdon
From Castellane to Carajuan Bridge in the commune of Rougon, the Verdon flows for approximately 14 kilometers. The riverbed is wider than in the previous paragraph. In places, the water came to perforate the limestone rock. These are “clues” which allow the water to continue on its way. Magnificent course which is practiced in Rafting and Canoe. Only when the flow regulated by the EDF dam of Chaudanne allows it. We will never tire of admiring the landscapes of the Provencal Alps quietly sitting on a rafting. Or to get boosted by the song of the cicadas when approaching the famous St Jean clue.
The Grand Canyon du Verdon
From Carajuan Bridge to Lake Sainte Croix, there is one of the most beautiful canyons in Europe; The grand canyon of Verdon. A real cut in the pre-alpine limestone plateau which can reach 700 meters deep by 30 kilometers long. This exceptional site is particularly difficult to access and the river bed unsuitable for commercial navigation. It is the ideal place for the practice of Aquatic Hiking (aqua-rando). On the right bank, at a place called Belvédère du Couloir samson, there is a half-day route accessible to all. On the left bank, along the Imbut trail is a day of aqua trekking considered by many to be the must in the Verdon.
