Lakes of the Verdon! A world of legend! Not yet… The scenery is imposing but the water bodies are still very young to produce legends. Indeed, all these lakes (five in total) are artificial. The lakes of Chaudanne, Castillon, Sainte-Croix, Quinson and Esparron were created for various regional and national needs.
At the regional level first of all, we will note that the water which comes out of the tap in the big cities of the coast is essentially the water retained by the lakes of the verdon. At the national level, the creation of these dams was part of a broad policy of creating means of energy production.
Since their creation, these lakes have also attracted a very avid tourism to these territories, especially during the summer. In particular in the low gorges, many hotel infrastructures were installed close to the water. They offer a more “natural” alternative to what is offered on the Mediterranean coast.
